26th May 2008 - Learning the Piano

Hello, I'm Jonathan and I've been learning the piano for nearly 30 years. One of the great things about learning the piano is that you can start at any age. All it takes is a dose of enthusiasm along with the determination to persevere with the practice. When I first started playing, at the age of 7, I was not taught to pass exams. Rather, I was taught to become familiar with the keyboard and enjoy playing just for pleasure's sake. The worst thing a parent can do is push their children through exams right from the start - if they don't learn to enjoy playing they will feel resentful and give up when the pieces get harder. If a child enjoys something, they will be much more likely to stick with it for life. The first exam I took was Grade 4. I went on to pass Grade 8 and am now learning the organ.

The other day I came across an interesting and exciting learning tool, called Rocket Piano. It has been developed by a fellow Grade 8 pianist with training in commercial music and plenty of experience in playing Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock and Gospel. If you're interested in learning to play by ear (one thing I can't do - yet!), how to quickly familiarize yourself with chords or the best way to acquire perfect pitch, her course offers a good way to start. Her book on how to play Jazz piano will brush you up on your history, as well as teaching you the ins and outs of playing Jazz. In addition, there are enjoyable games to assist you in learning notes and chords in half the time.
